The 2027 Hyundai Santa Fe EREV: A New Approach to Electrification

Hyundai continues to expand its electrified lineup with the upcoming introduction of a new technology: the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV). The Hyundai Santa Fe will be the first to feature it, with a new version planned for 2027.

Announced for the U.S. market in the first half of 2027, the Santa Fe EREV will combine primarily electric driving with a gasoline engine that acts as a generator. This approach aims to offer the benefits of an electric vehicle while easing concerns about range on longer trips.

What Is an EREV?

EREV stands for Extended-Range Electric Vehicle.

Unlike a traditional hybrid, in which the gasoline engine can directly help drive the wheels, an EREV is propelled by electric motors. The gasoline engine primarily serves as a generator, producing electricity when needed.

For the upcoming Santa Fe EREV, Hyundai plans to place an electric motor on each axle, powered by a high-voltage battery. The gasoline engine will be able to generate electricity to extend the vehicle's range when needed.

The Best of Both Approaches?

The goal of this technology is to deliver a driving experience similar to that of an electric vehicle while offering a solution for drivers who regularly travel long distances.

For everyday driving, the vehicle can run on electric power. On longer trips, the gasoline engine can act as a generator, producing the energy needed to extend its range.

Hyundai says its next generation of EREVs could offer more than 600 miles, or approximately 960 km, of range through an optimized combination of battery power and a gasoline-powered generator.

A New Chapter for the Santa Fe

The Santa Fe already plays an important role in Hyundai's lineup, thanks in part to its three-row design and range of electrified powertrain options.

The model continues to evolve for 2027. In Canada, the Santa Fe is currently available as a hybrid with a 1.6L turbocharged engine producing 231 horsepower. It also offers three rows of seating for six or seven passengers, depending on the configuration.

The arrival of EREV technology could give drivers another option for enjoying electric driving while retaining flexibility for longer trips.

Will the Santa Fe EREV Come to Canada?

For now, we'll have to wait to find out whether the Santa Fe EREV will be sold in Canada.

Hyundai has announced that this new version will launch first in the United States and be produced at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama. Canadian availability has not yet been confirmed.

At Saint-Jean Hyundai, we'll be following Hyundai Canada's announcements closely for news about this model and its potential availability in Quebec.

A Technology to Watch

With the EREV, Hyundai is exploring another way to advance vehicle electrification. The technology aims to combine the benefits of electric propulsion with the flexibility of a gasoline-powered generator for longer journeys.

The 2027 Hyundai Santa Fe EREV is one to watch as Hyundai's electrified lineup continues to evolve.
